This hardwearing vintage floor covering was made by Tuareg nomadic tribes in Mauritania from materials found locally in the desert circa 2000. It served as protection from hot sand during the day and also insulation from cold sand at night. As the Tuareg caravan moved from place to place, this mat could easily be rolled, packed and carried to its next destination. Tightly woven reeds form the base of the mat and painted strips of goatskin leather have been used to weave intricate geometric patterns into the reeds for decorative purposes. This mat has been bound in goatskin leather. Each Tuareg mat is unique. They look good and are very functional.
Ingenious idea – creating mats to withstand any extreme of temperature out of materials found locally in the desert. So strong and durable, yet beautiful to look at too with their individual patterns and earthy tones. This one has a beautiful traditional Berber design."
