This hardwearing vintage floor covering was made by Tuareg nomadic tribes in Mauritania from materials found locally in the desert circa 1970. It served as protection from hot sand underfoot as well as from cold temperatures. As the Tuareg caravan moved from place to place, this mat could easily be rolled, packed and carried to their next destination. Tightly woven reeds form the base of the mat and strips of goat skin leather were used to weave intricate geometric patterns into the reeds for decorative purposes, producing lovely earthy tones. This mat was then bound in goat skin leather. Each Tuareg rug is unique. They look good and are very functional. Please note, this mat is vintage and has some wear commensurate with age.
Ingenious idea – creating mats to withstand any extreme of temperature out of materials found locally in the desert. So strong and durable, yet beautiful to look at too with their individual patterns and earthy tones. This large vintage mat has a beautiful traditional Berber design.
