This is a visually exciting knotted wool rug made in the 1970s in the Boujad region of Morocco. It features a strong palette of colours ranging from sky blue and lime green to orange to yellow, purple and black – a lively colour combination. A loose checkerboard design gives a small amount of uniformity and yet the creative use of colour and design make this a very artistic and unique tribal art rug.
I call this one ‘Liqourice Allsorts’ because of the mixture of colours that remind me of those delicious treats. This rug is just so creative in its design, very free flowing from top to bottom. I love it!"

About Boujad rugs
Rugs from the Boujad region of Morocco, woven by the women of the Al Haouz plain, can generally fall into three categories:
- Classic tribal designs featuring geometric shapes surrounded by a decorative border.
- Art rugs featuring checkerboard patterns or simply large blocks of colour, sometimes leading the designs to be compared with the works of artists such as Klee or Rothko.
- Abstract weavings – a creative mix of tribal motifs, shapes and lines in bright contrasting colours, sometimes accompanied by recognisable motifs of people, animals, teapots or scenes from memory.
The tribal art rugs made in this region are much sought-after due to their very creative nature. This really is tribal art at its best!
