Description
This is a beautiful handwoven rug made circa 1970 by the women of the nomadic Ait Bou Ichaouen tribe in the north-east of Morocco. Its base is a tightly woven cream hanbel (kilim) and it is adorned with a geometrical lozenge design made from recycled textiles in shades of pink, green, blue, white and yellow. It is quite rare to find vintage rugs made by this tribe. A very attractive and vibrant rug.
This rug design on its strong kilim base has been so cleverly created using scraps of fabric. I admire the resourceful nature of Berber women, applying such colour and vibrancy to a plain flatweave, and producing such an attractive final piece."

About Ait Bou Ichaouen rugs
The Ait Bou Ichaouen tribe, in contrast to most other carpet-producing tribes, are a nomadic tribe, whose rugs have only been discovered within the last twenty-five years or so due to the tribe’s remote location in north-east Morocco. Rugs from this region often have bold colours and patterns stemming from the weaver’s imagination rather than any external influences. They are stunning collectible pieces and quite rare.
