This is a striking traditional vintage rug from the High Atlas Mountains, handmade by the tribes of the Ait Ouaouzguite tribal confederation circa 1980. It boasts a straw-coloured field with various traditional Berber tribal symbols in a muted palette of dark brown, dusky pink and orange. The outstanding feature of this rug is the prominence of two diamond shapes, possibly representing protection from the 'evil eye', a common belief in Moroccan popular culture. This rug is totally unique in its design.
Please note, a minor repair has been made previously to this rug at the edge (see photo). However, it does not detract from the beauty of the rug.
This rug has tribal written all over it. The eyes as symbols of protection, the various motifs strewn randomly around the field of the rug, the ’male’ zigzag lines encasing the rug. Just stunning!"

About Ait Ouaouzguite rugs
Made by tribes belonging to the Ait Ouaouzguite tribal confederation, these stunning woollen rugs hail from the Jbel Siroua region of Morocco which extends from the High Atlas Mountains in the north to the pre-Saharan regions in the south. They are sometimes collectively known as 'Taznakht rugs' as Taznakht is the town at the centre of this carpet weaving industry. These rugs are renowned for their high-quality silky wool, their traditional designs and their striking colours. The wool is often dyed using the natural colours of surrounding plants such as saffron, madder, henna and indigo. The quality of work produced by the weavers of this region is exceptional.
